Yes it’s best to visit the winery but sometimes we have to do impromptu tastings where we can.
In Adelaide we tasted and bought the lovely Homestead range of wines from Victoria after a tasting in Dr Tony Jordan's hotel room. In Melbourne, it was a tasting of the McPherson Basilisk Shiraz Mourvedre in the winemaker’s windowless hotel room that made us buy it.
On this trip we had a quick tasting in my hotel room with two Chileans who we may well buy from. Wines really have to shine in these conditions. No fancy glasses or vineyard views – in fact the main problem was finding a corkscrew as none of us had one.
