South America Trip Day 1: Bristol, London, Paris and now sitting in Santiago domestic departures with a view of snow-capped mountains.

Awaiting our connection up to La Serena and the Elqui Valley, most northerly Chilean wine region and home to Alta Tierra, the highest vineyards in Chile with some vineyards at 6500 ft. The sunlight, arid conditions and altitude make for intensely flavoured wines. Brought my trainers but I doubt I could last more than 20 minutes running at the altitude!

Stunning views, courtesy of Air France, of the highest peak of the Andes at dawn, Mt. Aconcagua at 26000 ft. Chilly in Chile, odd putting on a fleece here but it is only 3 degrees outside.

I am really excited to be back as it is so visually stunning and the people so hospitable, and am confident of finding wines and stories this week that translate the majesty of the place.

(Would you believe Air France serve Chilean wine in their London lounge!!)
