Herve Fabre comes from a Bordeaux wine family but left 16 years ago to buy a vineyard in Chile. However he fell in love with the Malbec he tasted from Argentina and bought an old vine vineyard in the Vistalba area of Mendoza. With his energetic wife Diane, he has created a small winery with the feel of a high quality Bordeaux chateau.
Their Gran Reserva Malbec is truly one of Argentina's finest buys (“a wine to buy by the case” according to The Wine Gang). I also had the first tasting with them tonight of our exclusive new HJ Fabre Malbec which was already looking superb and arrives in October. They served it slightly chilled with the beef which was a nice touch.
Their young winemaker is off to Montalcino for the harvest and his father Jorge (Chief winemaker at Norton) joined us for dinner. He wanted to know where he could find a good Indian restaurant in London. I learned today that Argentineans eat 60 kilos of beef per year so Jorge is obviously looking for a bit of a change.
