Drove home to England. For those who might be interested in popping down to see us in Bordeaux, these days we ourselves usually drive via the St Malo ferry. Because it’s the shortest distance to drive and quickest; all dual carriageway. 6 - 7 hours. About half what it took pre-motorway.
You can break the monotony halfway by leaving the autoroute and going round Niort the pretty way through the Marais Poitevin; green canals and cows. Calming. And of course there are vineyards to visit. There are vineyards everywhere in France. Apart the odd Alp and the odd swamp, vines can grow anywhere. Even where the maps say there are none. You look on the ridges and there are the green lines; Muscadet, the Poitvin, Cognac, Bordeaux.
St Malo is the best of all Channel ports. Stay in the walled citadel - 'Intra Muros' - lots to see. And eat. Stay at the 'Elizabeth'; more a garaging service with rooms and could not be more helpful. Just abandon you car and handover the keys. The Bar Simon nearby is small, family and friendly. We had a nice Cheverny, a much improved appellation, with our fish.
