Our habit of some years, when we stagger into the town through the quiet East Gate; Porte Brunet, is to dive straight into the Clos des Cordeliers sparkling winery cellars for a bottle of their pink Cremant in their Cloisters. When I first came here - 60's - this was where most people came on a Sunday outing, for the fizz made in the caves below and some macarons. And the gossip.
That was in the days when the town had one wine shop. Which wasn't busy. Nobody went to Saint Emilion for its most famous wine. The town was known then for its fizz! True!
Anyway the good news is the old place is being restored. The cloisters - it was originally one of St Emilion's dozen religious houses are beginning to look like they might stay up a few centuries more. And there's a shop, and a toilet! And they'll even sell you a picnic in a basket. With the pink bubbles - perfect.
Home to meet the newly arrived phone staff doing their 2 weeks work placement in the Chai! Nice young chap and three stunning girls. Mmm.. We need to do videophones!
