"English wine beats Champagne to win Decanter trophy" (The Telegraph)

Mike Roberts, who makes our Laithwaites Theale Vineyard, our South Ridge and Barbara's Wyfold has just won Best in World for one of his own vineyard's wines. He won the Decanter Trophy, against all manner of celebrated Champagne names.

Well this IS encouraging for us! Last night I once again showed the Theale 2005 at a little tasting in The Arch at Vinopolis.

Went down SO well!

And this morning went over to see Henry's new vineyard at Marlow. They were just banging in the last of the steel posts. With the wires partly in place and the baby vines reaching almost waist high it now looks like a real vineyard.

Quite a risk putting 20,000 vines into a bit of land that previously only grew horses.

But Mike Roberts has shown the way. He's a great bloke is Mike. One of the very best. One day people will speak his name in the respectful way they speak of Dom Perignon. If it were not for Mike none of us would be doing this. And England would not have a burgeoning new industry ... The Bubbly industry.
