Castillon; About Scuttling

I took Libby, who runs the social side of Le Chai au Quai (will fix you up for tastings tours, weddings whatever), around Castillon market to meet the traders. Then to Annette and Jean-Pierre's house which sits above the Chai roof on the old Town Wall.

Looking across the Dordogne, chatting about '69 when he and I used to frequent a night-club in an old barge just across the river by the bridge. Great music. Loud British Rock.

Sadly, one night in the '71 it mysteriously blew up and sank. Why?

As it happened, just across the river from the rocking barge was the house where Admiral La Borde lived out his last years, after his death sentence for treason was commuted.

The 90 year old Admiral was notoriously anti-British. He cannot have enjoyed that music. And he was, after all, the Admiral famous for being in charge of blowing-up and scuttling the French fleet at Toulon!

Castillon has always wondered....????
