I just got this email from Clare in Bordeaux

(runs Le Chai au Quai and our La Clariere-Laithwaite vineyard and a few countries; Normally a calm person, our Clare, but it starts;

"This is absolutely FANTASTIC news!!!!! I am so thrilled.

Chateau La Clariere awarded the Laureat de Prix d'Excellence 2011 for Bordeaux wines, from the prestigious Concours de Paris....in recognition of its outstanding medal-winning achievements and of maintaining the highest of standards and quality over the last 3 years (2008, 2009 and 2010)

A huge achievement which we should be mightily proud of and share as widely as possible.

WELL DONE Henry, WELL DONE Olivier and WELL DONE JeanMarc and Mark for all the great support.

Helene, bravo!!! Je le ferais part a Claudy lundi quand je suis de retour au bureau. C'est une honneur qu'elle doit partager."

I choked on my fish and my lunch companion - in Borough Market - ordered me a Large Cognac.

I asked for more and Helene, poor Helene - adored by visiting Confreres and Keyholders - who now sits alone at LaClariere since Claudy retired to be Mayor, sent the following;

"As you all already know we have had the extreme privilege to be awarded as LAUREAT DU PRIX D’EXCELLENCE 2011 within the prestigious Concours Général Agricole de Paris.

This year they granted 30 awards covering all agricultural products.

In the wine field there are only 12 awards all over France. And CHATEAU LA CLARIERE LAITHWAITE is the FIRST, the only one in the Bordeaux region which means that WE represent the Bordeaux region with this award.

The Concours Général de Paris is splitting France in regions like region Alsace, region Rhone …..and we are the ONE in the Bordeaux wines.

CG de Paris awarded us by calculating the number of medals won compared to the number of wines subscribed over the last 3 years.

The vintages awarded were then Château La Clarière Laithwaite 2006 (silver), 2007 (gold) and 2008 (gold).

You have to know that this award is granted to the COMPANY DIRECT WINES CASTILLON SARL /CHATEAU LA CLARIERE LAITHWAITE for its efforts in maintaining quality in the production of its wines.

The date in February to collect the Medal in Paris will be known soon and I will let everybody know but the French Ministre de l’Agriculture called Mr Lemaire or his representative will come …….

Que de bonnes choses !!!!!

HELENE"

Or "Eee By Gum, whatever next?" as Grandmother (who first sent me to Bordeaux in '65) would have said.

Here's a list of medals La Clariere has won since starting competing in 1988.

We've won golds since our first vintage, though I have to say the competition has got much harder and there is no question the last few vintages are in a different league to what we made earlier. Huge investments in time and money have been needed and the price is not the same either, but you want to be Number One in Castillon, you have to do what it takes.

Certainly today, I think we can claim our little La Clariere is #1!
