Spent the day having a Board Meeting in the midst of the most active office and warehouse I've ever seen.
Today was the busiest day since last Christmas and they look set to do 120,000 cases this week which will be an all-time record. For all that there is no flap. At least to my eyes. There may be lots of frantic paddling going on underneath, but the cellars today seem to glide.
Hasn't always been like this as some may remember. The team have improved and improved and improved. They will never stop, I guess. Today I saw containers from Australia being unpacked. They no longer use pallets, but put the cases on these mats which can be grabbed by a modified fork-lift, and the cases slid out. As a result there isn't an inch of spare, wasted space in a container. Savings. The mats - indeed 93% of all waste - is recycled.
Watch out for the new cartons with drawings on. This was my idea; after twenty years of boring blank, brown cartons, I submitted some of my drawings on a box. Sir implemented the idea ... but chose another artist! I am sulking.
Upstairs the phones were getting quite warm but while I was watching the 'calls waiting' indicator did not go over 2.
Monday a niece of mine brought a party from the Institute of Directors to see the place. They loved it, apparently. If any reader fancies bringing friends and seeing round our vast cellars and trying a few wines, etc. just drop me a line; I'll get someone to organise it. Best leave it till after Christmas though.
The way Christmases get later every year I think next week will be even busier and maybe the one after that, busier still.
