Rioja Festival del Vino

Last time we had a big get together with customers at our vineyard in Bordeaux it was unanimously decided we would have to do it again with Rioja as the favoured destination.

So here we are May 24 2002, another 150 of us heading for Bilbao, praying for good weather - some flew, some drove, some sailed, but we did all meet up as arranged for a quick scoot around the new Guggenheim. Love the building ... would make a great winery ... be a much better use of the space - ask any philistine.

Oh, and found a refreshing glass of the local white: Txakoli - used to be the original table-gripper white ... "takes five men to drink it ... one to swallow, four to hold him down". But nowadays it is, or can be, remarkably nice with the local hyper-fresh fish you will see being grilled over charcoal all along the coast.

The opening event was at the Luis Canas bodega. Not a big bodega, Luis himself looking anxious. Was he worried we'd all fit in or was it all these high spirited Brits wading into his precious wines with great gusto.
